Refreshingly straightforward wisdom
Today, my 87-year-old dad made his social media debut on Instagram. He shared his thoughts on procrastination, and his no-nonsense approach was truly refreshing. It got me thinking about how often I try to absorb too much information to make my judgments.
Dad has a large network of friends and colleagues he talks to on the phone, or WhatsApp. He reads the Financial Times every day, occasionally tunes into Radio 4, and watches the 10 pm news, but he lives outside the 24-hour perma-news or social media cycle. He’s extremely well-informed, still works in M&A on select projects, and his life is rich with experience and wisdom after nearly 70 years in the workforce.
His insights on procrastination were refreshingly straightforward. He pointed out that as you age, your memory isn't always as sharp, so you have to tackle tasks immediately to avoid forgetting them. In contrast, when you're young, you're often busy with exciting activities, making it easy to push less exciting tasks to the back of the pile. He’s right.
Perhaps procrastination in 2023 is simply a result of having to make too much information to filter and many decisions to make every day? Food for thought. #Procrastination #Productivity #Wisdom
